Anyone whose job it is to sell their widget will tell you that commercial photography isn't rocket science. But that doesn't mean that terrific images don't sell a lot more products than snapshots.

No matter how many people have been involved with the "design" of the final image, on the day of the shoot the photographer arrives with his/her own toolbox. The top couple of drawers are full of the equipment they'll use to produce the picture, that's cameras, film, lights, computers and assistants. Halfway down the box the drawers are filled with memories of other shoots, and the heavy big bottom drawer, the foundation of the box, is their creative vision.

For our team the top drawers are filled with both film and digital cameras in various formats from 35mm to the old fashioned 4x5 under the darkcloth behemoth, lots of hot lights, strobes and several Macs fully equiped with the Photoshop Suite. And since we also design and build our own props and sets we've included a carpenter's drawer.

With 30 plus years working in the business we arrive with our center drawers crammed with recollections. Most shoots go smoothly, some have funny moments, but there are also a handful of scary times on tall buildings, the inevitable equipment failure and the resulting scramble to meet the deadline.

Our bottom drawer, the foundation of our business is more than just a visual style, it's a philosophy. We assume the client knows more about his consumer than we do, so we listen a lot and work to highlight each product's best features.
